Embroidery – A Palestinian Art Form

Flyer for Embroidery—A Palestinian art form at Oakton Library with a colorful geometric embroidery band and event details, date and time.

Palestinian embroidery, known as tatreez, is an ancient cross-stitch tradition historically used to decorate traditional dresses. Tatreez was passed down through generations, using motifs and colors that acted as a “living archive”, signifying a woman’s regional identity, marital status, and village.

This program will include a brief presentation about Palestinian embroidery and thobe traditions with several examples, followed by a workshop teaching some of the basics of Palestinian tatreez.  A materials kit will be provided and students will create their own piece to bring home.
