A person died this afternoon (Thursday) after getting trapped under a tour bus outside Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responded at 5 p.m. to the Filene Center at 1551 Trap Road for a report of an individual getting trapped under a commercial bus, according to scanner traffic.
The person reportedly became trapped under the front of the bus. FCFRD units, including a medic, remained at the scene until the U.S. Park Police arrived.
“At approximately 5 p.m., USPP responded to a report that a tour bus collapsed on a worker in a parking lot at Wolf Trap,” the park police said in a statement. “The worker was underneath the bus when the apparatus supporting it failed.”
Police didn’t comment on whether the worker was injured or hospitalized, but Wolf Trap announced on its website and social media pages around 7 p.m. that tonight’s show has been canceled “out of respect” after a community member lost their life in an accident at the park.
British New Wave musicians Squeeze, Adam Ant and Haircut 100 were scheduled to perform on the Filene Center stage at 7:30 p.m. It’s unclear if the show could get rescheduled, but given Wolf Trap’s typically tight summer schedule, it seems unlikely.
The Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, which manages programming for the venue, directed further inquiries to the U.S. Park Police.
The Filene Center is currently set to reopen tomorrow (Friday) for a celebration of The Grateful Dead with members of The Jerry Garcia Band, guitarist Grahame Lesh, drummer John Morgan Kimock and singer Kanika Moore, backed by the National Symphony Orchestra.
