A woman was killed earlier this evening (Friday) after she was struck by a driver while traveling on Route 50 in a wheelchair.
The crash appears to have occurred around 8 p.m. on Route 50 at Plaza Lane just in front of Greenbriar Town Center near Chantilly, based on a traffic advisory sent through Fairfax Alerts.
“Preliminarily, an adult female operating a mobility wheelchair was struck by a vehicle,” the Fairfax County Police Department said on social media at 9:16 p.m. “She was transported to a local hospital and pronounced deceased.”
According to police, the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene of the crash and didn’t sustain any injuries.
Westbound Route 50 was reduced to one lane, as detectives with the FCPD’s Crash Reconstruction Unit investigated. Police advised drivers to find an alternate route.
This is the 14th fatal pedestrian crash in Fairfax County so far this year and the first to occur in more than a month, per state data. It is the second fatal crash to take place this year involving someone using a mobility device after a woman was hit by a truck on Richmond Highway on July 2.
The driver remained on scene and was not injured. Westbound Route 50 at Plaza Ln is down to one lane. Please use an alternate route. Detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit are responding to investigate. (2/2)
