Another man has died while in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

Brendan Brown, a 38-year-old Springfield resident, was found unresponsive in his cell at the jail yesterday morning (Oct. 8), prompting deputies to declare a medical emergency, according to separate press releases from the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) and the Fairfax County Police Department.

“Deputies and ADC medical personnel immediately began conducting CPR until Fairfax County Fire and Rescue responded to continue lifesaving efforts,” the FCSO said.

However, Brown was pronounced dead at 7:25 a.m.

Detectives with the FCPD are now conducting an investigation into Brown’s death, in accordance with the sheriff’s office’s policy for in-custody deaths.

“Preliminarily, foul play is not suspected,” the police department said.

According to the FCPD, Brown had been incarcerated at the county jail “since the morning of October 8, 2026,” suggesting he had only been in custody for a short period before his death.

Officers arrested Brown on a charge of being drunk in public, the FCPD told FFXnow.

Brown is the third person to die in the FCSO’s custody so far this year, following two deaths in August. One individual died on Aug. 9 while in hospice care at a local hospital, while another died on Aug. 12 while being held on a trespassing charge.

Twenty people have died while in the sheriff’s office’s custody since 2017, according to past press releases.
