Local Students Find Success in Va. Aviation Competition, Move to Nationals

Local students took home first place in all three age levels in the Virginia Department of Aviation’s Virginia Aviation Art Contest.

More than 60 entries from students ranging in age from 6 to 18 were evaluated, with the winners moving on to competition sponsored by the National Association of State Aviation Officials.

The theme for the competition was “Air Sports for a Peaceful World.” Entries were judged by five individuals with backgrounds in aviation, art, design and media.

Students’ skill levels “are truly remarkable, and the theme allowed them to envision a more peaceful future for aviation and the world,” said Jaime Evans, one of the judges. “After all, they are the ones in charge of what lies ahead.”

Andrew Yang of Great Falls earned first place in the 6-to-10-year-old age group, with Diane Liu of McLean taking first place in the 11-to-14-year-old group and Anya Huang of Great Falls winning in the 15-to-18-year-old age group.

Also receiving second-place, third-place and honorable-mention awards, respectively, were the following local students: Elaine Eng of Vienna, Iris Xie of Vienna and Linyue Tong of Great Falls; Eric Shen of Vienna, Jacqueline Xie of Falls Church and Suri Wang of McLean; and Seungmin Baek of McLean and Sophie Xie of Falls Church.

In 2023, Virginia had two national winners, who advanced to the international aviation-art competition in Lausanne, Switzerland.
