(Updated at 12:30 p.m. with Metro information) Thanksgiving is nearly upon us, bringing with it the promise (or threat, depending on your situation) of family gatherings and days off for many public services.

The Fairfax County, Fairfax City, Herndon and Vienna governments will all observe the holiday tomorrow (Thursday) by closing their offices, but schedules are more varied for Friday (Nov. 24).

Korean fried chicken restaurant opens in Vienna, replacing Rose Kabob

A Korean fried chicken restaurant based in Centreville has spread its wings to Vienna, adopting a new name in the process.

Oh My Dak quietly opened at 128 Maple Avenue West in late October, according to Min Kim, who operates the eatery with her husband Joseph Kim. It takes the place of Rose Kabob, which closed last November after serving up Persian cuisine for 16 years.

Local Make-A-Wish families get preview of new Disney movie in Tysons

Some local families got an early holiday present this past weekend, courtesy of the Mouse House.

Disney offered an advance screening of its latest animated film — appropriately titled “Wish” — at Tysons Corner Center on Saturday (Nov. 18) to beneficiaries of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the nonprofit that grants requests from kids with critical illnesses.

New Thai eatery coming to Chesterbrook in McLean from D.C. restauranteurs

A Thai restaurant is on its way to Chesterbrook Shopping Center (6224 Old Dominion Drive) in McLean, though it will be some time before its doors open.

Sorn Thai will be a new concept from the team behind Donsak, a Thai restaurant that opened in D.C.’s Woodley Park neighborhood last November, property owner Federal Realty announced.

Mantua senior living community unveils first renovation in 43 years

The senior living community held a grand opening last Friday (Nov. 17) to reveal the results of its first renovation since getting established at 9229 Arlington Blvd in Mantua more than four decades ago.

Tysons man arrested for illegal machine gun possession

Fairfax County police confiscated multiple machine guns last week from a Tysons man who was suspected of sending sexual messages to a juvenile.

Detectives began investigating Craig Strasbourger, 31, after receiving a tip in September from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline, which gets reports of child sexual exploitation incidents, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

Maryland man dies after crashing into Old Keene Mill Road jersey barrier

A Maryland man died early yesterday (Sunday) morning after crashing into the jersey barrier at the Old Keene Mill Road and Backlick Road intersection in Springfield.

Issac Garcia Mendoza, 21, of Oxon Hill was seen driving north on Backlick “at a high rate of speed” around 1:21 a.m., according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

UPDATED: Annandale man arrested for fatal shooting at Fairview Park Marriott

Updated at 1 p.m. — Hiep Van Vo, the suspect in Sunday’s shooting at the Fairview Park Marriott, was arrested at 11 p.m. yesterday outside a Giant in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Fairfax County police said today (Monday).

Vo is in custody at the Montgomery County Detention Center “awaiting extradition back to Fairfax County,” according to police.

BREAKING: Six teens seriously injured, one arrested in Idylwood crash

Updated at 8:40 p.m. — The 17-year-old driver who crashed on Pioneer Lane this morning was arrested for driving under the influence, but the Fairfax County Police Department says it will wait to officially file charges after consulting with the Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.

“Charges are pending as the investigation continues,” the FCPD said in a news release. “Detectives believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.”

Tysons-based Hilton named world’s best workplace in annual Fortune ranking

The best place to work in the world can be found right in Tysons, according to a new Fortune magazine ranking.

Hilton, the hotel company headquartered at Park Place II (7930 Jones Branch Drive), topped the 2023 World’s Best Workplaces list released yesterday by Fortune and Great Place to Work, a research and data platform that bills itself as the “global authority on workplace culture.”
