Tysons black bear has also been seen in Vienna, Reston, police confirm

The black bear spotted wandering past the Adaire Apartments in Tysons on Sunday (Oct. 30) is the same one seen in Vienna, Reston and other parts of Fairfax County earlier this fall, police say.

The animal has been active in the county for about two months now, traveling in the Vienna, Oakton, McLean, Reston and Fairfax areas, according to Katherine Edwards, the Fairfax County Police Department’s wildlife management specialist.

County won’t rename Sully District, pushing instead for more education on its history

Fairfax County has opted not to move forward with a potential Sully District renaming.

Sully District Supervisor Kathy Smith announced at yesterday’s board meeting that she believes “the best step forward at this time is to retain” the name of the magisterial district, which encompasses the southwestern corner of Fairfax County.

Male police officers in the Town of Vienna will forgo shaving razors this November for a second consecutive year.

Starting yesterday through Nov. 30, Chief Jim Morris has suspended the Vienna Police Department’s usual prohibition against facial hair to support its “Grow & Give” fundraising campaign, which aims to increase awareness and money for prostate cancer research.

Fairfax County will scale back mass Covid vaccine clinics next week

The days of getting COVID-19 vaccinations at the Fairfax County and South County government centers are numbered.

The mass vaccine clinics will reduce operations from five to three days per week, starting Monday (Nov. 7), the Fairfax County Health Department announced last week.

Smoothie King is now open to customers at 258 Maple Ave East, where it replaced the furniture store Savvy Rest Natural Bedroom in the same block as Sweet Leaf Cafe.

(Updated at 6 p.m.) Tysons got an unexpected visitor this weekend in the form of an apparently solo black bear.

The animal was spotted ambling along the Boyd Pointe Way sidewalk outside the Adaire Apartments in a video shared on Twitter last night by FOX5 reporter Angie Goff. She said it was seen on Sunday (Oct. 30) at 1521 Boyd Pointe Way.

(Updated at 7:35 p.m.) The race to finalize voter rolls for next week’s midterm elections may come down to the wire after Fairfax County received thousands of new applications today (Monday).

A computer error that affected Virginia’s voter registration system earlier this summer resulted in the state sending another 11,000 applications to the Fairfax County Office of Elections, which says it “will do whatever it takes” to process the documents in time for Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Police seek persons of interest after man fatally shot at Skyline Towers

A man was shot and killed in an apartment at Skyline Towers near Bailey’s Crossroads yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, prompting a momentary shelter-in-place order for residents.

Police are now seeking the public’s help to identify three men spotted on surveillance footage who were allegedly seen leaving the apartment complex’s south tower “within about 10 to 15 minutes” of the shooting, Fairfax County Police Department Second Lt. James Curry said at a briefing.

October is drawing to a close, but Tysons Corner Center still has a few new retailers to unveil this month, just before the holiday shopping rush gets underway.

On the mall’s second level next to Brooks Brothers, the online clothing company Everlane will open its 11th brick-and-mortar location — and its second in the D.C. area — on Thursday (Oct. 27).

The Boro developer may build future high-rise as offices, not housing

The developer behind The Boro in Tysons is rethinking its plans to build a residential high-rise on what’s currently a parking lot in front of the mixed-use neighborhood.

In an Oct. 17 proposal to Fairfax County, The Meridian Group seeks to turn an approved 310-foot-tall residential tower into a 304-foot-tall office building — an unexpected shift when high office vacancies and demand for more housing has most developers moving in the opposite direction, as the Washington Business Journal noted.
