Vending machines that encourage charitable giving are returning to Tysons Corner Center just in time for the holidays.

The Light the World Giving Machines, which are sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints, will be unveiled outside the AMC Theatres (7850 Tysons Corner Center) at noon tomorrow (Saturday) and continue operations through Jan. 4.

Fairfax County police believe one man is behind a series of assault and exposure incidents that have occurred near the Washington & Old Dominion Trail in Reston over the past month.

Koby Berry, a 27-year-old Reston resident, was arrested on Nov. 15 after he was allegedly caught on video touching a woman “inappropriately” in a store at North Point Village Center earlier that week, the Fairfax County Police Department announced today (Thursday).

Fairfax City is seeking community input on how it handles trash and recycling.

The city will hold a public meeting tonight (Thursday) from 7-8 p.m. at Katherine Johnson Middle School (3801 Jermantown Road) on its Solid Waste Management Plan, which is undergoing a state-mandated update and will guide trash, recycling and composting practices over the next 20 years.

Students and staff at Brookfield Elementary School in Chantilly have been evacuated in response to a gas leak.

Units with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to the school at 4200 Lees Corner Road around 10:18 a.m. for a “hazardous material emergency,” according to scanner traffic.

Fairfax County has identified new operators for three of its homeless shelters after cutting ties with New Hope Housing in September.

The Fairfax City-based nonprofit Shelter House has taken over the Eleanor Kennedy Shelter (9155 Richmond Highway) in Fort Belvoir as well as Mondloch House and Place, an emergency shelter and permanent supportive housing site (3510 Lockheed Blvd) in Groveton.

An urban forester and arborist who worked for Fairfax County was among the two people who died earlier this month in a house fire in the Herndon area.

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeff McKay identified Toni Woods and her husband as the victims of the Nov. 6 fire when the board convened on Tuesday (Nov. 18) for its only November meeting.

A 79-year-old woman was found fatally stabbed in an apartment near the Innovation Center Metro Station near Herndon yesterday (Tuesday).

Officers responded to the 2300 block of Dulles Station Blvd around 10 a.m. after a caretaker “reported that she arrived at her patient’s residence and found her unresponsive,” the Fairfax County Police Department said in a news release today.

Two teens and one adult have been arrested in connection with a recent burglary of the Kile Mart at Lake Anne Plaza in Reston.

Officers were dispatched to the convenience store at 1611 Washington Plaza at 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 12 after a security alarm was triggered, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

After years of planning, the West Falls Church Metro station’s transformation into a mixed-use neighborhood is officially underway.

Developers EYA and Rushmark Properties joined officials from Metro and local governments to break ground today (Wednesday) on a project that will ultimately add up to 1 million square feet of residential, office and retail space on land currently covered by parking lots.

The Virginia Department of Transportation has completed its overhaul of the Walker Road bridge over Piney Run.

The new bridge between Walker Mill Road and Park Royal Drive in Great Falls features two lanes for traffic with a sidewalk on the south side. It has no weight limit, unlike the previous one-lane bridge, which could only support vehicles up to 10 tons.
