Reston Association turns to herbicide to fight hydrilla growth in Lake Thoreau

Reston Association is breaking out the herbicide this summer in response to a proliferation of hydrilla at Lake Thoreau.

The invasive aquatic plant resurfaced last year after a couple of quiet summers. Though RA replenished the lake’s population of grass carp this spring, the fish don’t appear to be keeping the hydrilla in check as effectively as hoped.

School bands stage concert at Army Museum after Independence Day parade cancellation

Though the National Independence Day Parade in D.C. was called off, hundreds of student musicians from around the country ensured America’s birthday celebration went on by relocating to a venue in Fairfax County.

Four high school bands that had expected to march in the District on Saturday (July 4) as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary festivities instead staged an impromptu concert at the National Museum of the United States Army in Fort Belvoir.

JUST IN: Man arrested again for 2014 pedestrian hit-and-run on Reston Parkway

A Herndon man has been arrested and charged a second time in connection with a crash that injured a pedestrian in Reston more than a decade ago.

Police have accused Enda Browne, now 43, of crashing into a woman who was crossing Reston Parkway at Spectrum Center at around 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 16, 2014.

Mitre proposes consolidating planned Tysons offices, making room for housing

A currently precarious federal contracting landscape has one major company rethinking its office needs in Fairfax County.

The Mitre Corporation is seeking to revise a master plan approved eight years ago for its Tysons headquarters campus, consolidating unbuilt office space that was previously going to be spread across five new buildings into two high-rise towers. One existing building and three undeveloped lots would be replaced by multifamily housing.

Fairfax County starts installing EV charging stations at government center

By the end of this year, workers and members of the public will be able to charge up their electric vehicles while at the office or accessing services at the Fairfax County Government Center.

Construction started Monday (June 29) on installations of the first EV charging stations at the county government’s headquarters (12000 Government Center Parkway) that will be available for public use, the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) announced.

Fairfax County opens 24-hour cooling center after Extreme Heat Warning issued for July 4

With the D.C. region facing scorching heat through this weekend, Fairfax County is adjusting its holiday closure plans to allow for a 24-hour cooling center at the Jim Scott Community Center in Oakton.

On top of previously announced alerts for today and tomorrow (Friday), the National Weather Service has issued another Extreme Heat Warning for the region on the Fourth of July, predicting potential heat index values of up to 113.

Stephen Charles “Steve” Shannon officially assumed the position yesterday (Wednesday) more than a decade after he was first elected to serve as a judge on the court, the circuit court clerk’s office announced.

Virginia is facing another lawsuit over its newly adopted but not-yet-enacted ban on future sales and manufacturing of assault firearms.

The Trump administration sued the Commonwealth of Virginia and Virginia State Police in federal court today (Wednesday), arguing that its planned restrictions on gun sales violate the Second Amendment.

Man on Metro tracks in Tysons draws police, requires pause in train service

Metro halted all Silver Line trains between the Tysons and McLean stations for a period this morning (Wednesday) so police could get a man off of the tracks.

Fairfax County police officers were dispatched at around 11:32 a.m. to an address near the McLean Metro station for a passenger experiencing an apparent “medical emergency,” according to scanner traffic.

Shotted will open first drive-thru cafe in former Compass Coffee

The popular Saudi-style coffee shop Shotted is continuing to expand its reach across the D.C. area, setting its sights next on a location in West Falls Church.

Founder and CEO Bandar Alhenaki says the growing chain is on track to open its first drive-thru coffeehouse this summer in the Shops at West Falls Church, where it will take over the vacated Compass Coffee building at 7393 Route 29.
