Reston library launches back-to-school book sale today

With Fairfax County Public Schools resuming classes next Monday (Aug. 18), Reston Regional Library will host a book sale to help students and their teachers prepare.

The Friends of Reston Regional Library is kicking off its biannual Kids Back to School Book Sale at 10 a.m. today (Thursday). Volunteers have been working since April to sort, clean and prepare “tens of thousands of books” for the sale, the group says.

Plan for final building in Tysons’ Park Crest neighborhood is under review

The last piece of the Park Crest development in Tysons is starting to take shape.

Developer Renaissance Centro has submitted a site plan to Fairfax County for a 206-unit residential building that would be constructed on currently vacant land near the Westpark Drive and Park Run Drive intersection.

Roggenart Bakery Cafe and Bistro is ready to unveil its new location at RTC West.

The bakery will begin serving coffee and its artisan pastries at 12130A Sunset Hills Road next week, with an official opening scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 21 at 10:30 a.m.

Flood Watch issued for Fairfax and D.C. area this afternoon

After a stretch of consistently sunny days, the D.C. region is facing a potential bout of rain this afternoon (Wednesday).

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for the area, including Fairfax County, that’s currently scheduled to take effect at 2 p.m. and continue until 9 p.m.

Reston Hospital renovates facility to support new heart surgery program

Reston Hospital Center is expanding its services to include a new advanced heart surgery program.

Expected to open by the end of 2025, the program led by surgeon and Army veteran Dr. William A. Cooper will be the first new cardiac surgery program to launch in Northern Virginia in nearly four decades, according to HCA Virginia Health System, which runs the hospital.

Wastewater project aims to head off overflow onto Merrifield post office site

The risk of overflowing wastewater mucking up post office operations in Merrifield should be alleviated sometime this fall.

That’s when the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) anticipates completing a project to upsize the sewer pipes near the Mosaic District.

‘Wonder’ food hall reveals which restaurants will be on the menu in Fairfax County

After introducing itself to D.C. and Arlington in July, the food hall and delivery service Wonder is planning to serve up its roster of celebrity chef-driven restaurants to Fairfax County this fall.

Forthcoming locations in Franconia and Reston are on track to open in September and October, respectively, a Wonder spokesperson confirmed to FFXnow.

A new gym is getting warmed up in Vienna’s former Tuesday Morning storefront.

After months of preparation, Pump24 Vienna anticipates opening in the Vienna Shopping Center at 136A Maple Avenue sometime in August, though the official launch date remains a moving target.

Cathy Hudgins Community Center in Reston to close for renovations

After this week, the Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate will be out of commission for the remainder of 2025.

The facility at 12125 Pinecrest Road in south Reston will close for about 20 weeks starting this Saturday (Aug. 16) to accommodate renovations, including a full heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system overhaul, according to the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS).

JW Marriott hotel and condos on track to launch at Reston Station this fall

Comstock Companies is nearing some significant milestones at Reston Row, the second phase of its Reston Station development near the Wiehle Metro station.

The developer expects to officially deliver the 1.6-million-square-foot district in the second half of 2025, starting with an anticipated fall launch for the new JW Marriott Reston Station Hotel and Residences, according to reported results for the second quarter of 2025, which were released last Thursday (Aug. 7).
