Springfield Jersey Mike’s among franchises cited for breaking child labor laws

U.S. Department of Labor investigations at four Northern Virginia Jersey Mike’s franchise locations have found the operator allowed more than a dozen employees under the age of 16 to perform dangerous tasks and work longer than permitted hours.

The department’s Wage and Hour Division determined that JM Burke LLC — the Charleston, South Carolina-based operator — violated the Fair Labor Standards Act at locations in Ashburn, South Riding, Springfield and Sterling, according to an agency news release.

Some aspects of the St. John’s Wood Apartments (11555 Olde Tiverton Circle) in Reston may soon change, despite some qualms from local residents and community groups.

The DSF Group — the real estate investment company that owns the property — is in the process of rebranding the apartments to “Halstead Reston” and plans to modernize the look and feel of internal and external signage.

Another Tysons office building is set to be transformed into housing.

After a public hearing on Tuesday (March 19), the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a proposal to convert the three-story office building at 8221 Old Courthouse Road into 55 multi-family apartments, including six workforce dwelling units.

Group behind George Washington’s Mount Vernon honored by governor, first lady

The nonprofit responsible for historic preservation at Mount Vernon collected a state-level honor last week.

Brush Fires Break Out Around D.C. Area — “Fires in Virginia and Maryland brought a smoky haze into the D.C. region Wednesday evening, as a combination of strong winds and low humidity created conditions that the National Weather Service could fuel more blazes…Fairfax County fire officials reported that crews were working ‘six outside fires’ and that dispatchers fielded calls for reports of smoke blown into the county” from other areas. FCPS Updates Covid Guidance — “In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department have updated school COVID-19 recommendations. The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended.” Students can now return to class if they’re “fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication” and their symptoms “have improved or resolved.” [FCPS]

Schedule Holding for Key George Mason Bldg.

The timetable appears to be holding as construction continues on a centerpiece building for George Mason University’s Arlington campus in Virginia Square.

In a new update, George Mason University officials say they expect private tenants to begin moving in on schedule this summer, with university staff and programs to begin their move-in in the spring of 2025.

February Recorded First Year-Over-Year Sales Increase Across Region in Nearly Two-and-a-Half Years

Home sales across Northern Virginia were in positive year-over-year territory in February for the first time since November 2021, and a mild increase in inventory is leading some to believe the springtime market could be a solid one.

“Spring is always strong for the Northern Virginia real estate market, but this one is looking particularly positive as we are seeing more listings coming on the market as compared to a year ago, and those who are buying are willing to spend a little more,” said David Raffinengo of KW Metro Center, a member of the board of directors of the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors (NVAR).
