At a moment when women’s rights, gender education, and democratic institutions are under coordinated attack, this week’s Friday Power Lunch brings together three women who are on the front lines of the fight to protect them.
Cory Amron – Board Member of Women Lawyers on Guard, joins to discuss how legal advocates are mobilizing to protect women’s rights and hold the line against rollbacks that are happening faster than most people realize.
Jessica Berg – English teacher, Women and Gender Studies curriculum writer, and founder of hswomenandgenderstudies.com — has spent years building one of the most innovative and courageous high school gender studies programs in Virginia. Her course is now taught at multiple Loudoun County schools. Now that work is under direct threat. Jessica will share what it looks like to fight for the right to teach honest, inclusive history and gender education when powerful forces want to erase it from the classroom entirely.
Bonnie Stabile – Associate Professor at George Mason University’s Schar School of Policy and Government, Founder and Director of the Gender and Policy Center, Co-Director of NEW Leadership Virginia, and author of Women, Power and Rape Culture — brings the research, the policy lens, and the long view. Her work connects the dots between women’s underrepresentation in power and the policies that follow when women are not at the table.
Together these three women ask the question this moment demands: what happens when the history we fought to tell, the rights we fought to protect, and the democracy we fought to build are all under attack at the same time?
The fight is not over. Not even close.
