By: Falls Church Arts

September 14, 2022

The 2022 Falls Church Arts “Scenes in the City” Plein Air Festival is underway. Artists from the local area as well as those who choose to travel from a distance, in this case as far away as New York, can be spotted at scenic areas throughout the Little City painting en plein air, or outside. This type of painting must be done quickly and on site to capture the ever-changing light. Popular locations in the past have been the W&OD trail, local parks, the farmhouse at Cherry Hill Park, Clare and Don’s Beach Shack, and the Farmer’s Market. If interested, please feel free to join the artists as they compete to capture the history, architecture, and natural beauty of Falls Church in their paintings. Artists will continue to paint daily until the morning of the festival.

Artists may register for the event at https://fallschurcharts.org. To be considered for the competition, participating artists must visit Falls Church Arts gallery or Art and Frame of Falls Church during their open hours, to have their papers or canvases stamped. Works will be on display at Falls Church City Hall grounds, 300 Park Avenue, Falls Church, starting between 8 and 9 am, until noon on Saturday, September 24. The festival will also include a Quick Draw Competition from 8 am to 11 am. During this competition, artists will start and complete a work of art in just three hours.

The Plein Air Festival also includes a People’s Choice Award which is determined by the highest number of votes cast for a painting by the public on the day of the festival. Participating artists will also have the opportunity to cast votes for their favorite work in the Artist’s Choice Award. It is all free for attendance.

Multiple winners at the Plein Air Festival, including People’s Choice, Artist’s Choice and Quick Draw Competition will be announced at noon at Falls Church City Hall grounds.

Juror, Andrei Kushnir, well known for his American landscape paintings and publications on Plein Air Painting, will be judging the works. Prize awards range from $250 to $1,250. In the event of rain, the event will be held on October 1.
Awards have been made possible by a number of generous sponsors.
This community-building and family-friendly event is free to the public. Paintings will be available for purchase and may be taken home the day of the Festival. To learn more, go to https://FallsChurchArts.org..
