An initial design concept is in the works for a new Embry Rucker Community Shelter in Reston.
The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) began preliminary concept design and programming evaluations in May to establish an updated cost estimate for the long-planned emergency homeless shelter, according to public information officer Sharon North.
Reston Association is preparing to serve up a full renovation of its Barton Hill tennis courts next month.
The four existing courts at 1901 Barton Hill off of Sunrise Valley Drive will close after June 30 in anticipation of the renovation, which is expected to begin in July, RA announced in a newsletter on Friday (June 14).
The Town of Herndon is looking to improve the designs of Ferndale Avenue and the Park Avenue and Monroe Street intersection, two spots with histories of crashes.
Staff with the town’s Department of Public Works will present their initial proposals for the two projects at a community meeting tonight (Thursday) in the town council’s chambers at 765 Lynn Street. The meeting is scheduled to last from 7-8:30 p.m., and Spanish translation services will be available.
Work is underway to replace the escalators at the Vienna Metro station.
Started on Monday, June 3, the project will replace each of the escalators to the train platform one at a time with new escalators that are “more durable and reliable,” the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced.

A road diet is coming to a portion of Sterling Road in Herndon, providing interim safety improvements while the town scours for funding to support a larger-scale overhaul.
Crews are slated to begin restriping the road between Herndon Parkway and Elden Street tomorrow (Tuesday), necessitating detours and lane closures, the town said in a newsletter sent Friday (May 17). The Herndon Police Department advises avoiding the area “until the road work has been completed.”
