A developer hopes to alchemize real estate gold out of a faltering building in Coppermine Commons, an office complex in the McNair area south of Herndon.

Plans to redevelop a key parcel straddling the boundary between Fairfax County and Falls Church City are about to get a boost.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission signaled last week that it plans to recommend that the Board of Supervisors authorize staff to study amending the comprehensive plan to allow mixed-use development on a 2.4-acre parcel fronting Route 7 located on the Fairfax side of the border.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors around midnight on Tuesday (May 13) voted 9-0 to move forward with a plan for affordable housing on the soon-to-be-vacated Franconia Governmental Center site.

The vote — unanimous except for absent Springfield District Superivsor Pat Herrity — came after hours of public testimony for and against the proposal to amend the county’s Comprehensive Plan related to the 22.75-acre site known as the Franconia Triangle.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission voted 10-1 on Wednesday (May 7) to recommend that the Board of Supervisors advance a contentious plan that would allow affordable housing on the current Franconia Governmental Center site.

The vote came after most commissioners said they were satisfied concerns raised by nearby residents could be fully evaluated before an actual development plan is brought forward.
