Prosperity Avenue road diet plan faces obstacle from proposed development

Fairfax County’s plan to add protected bicycle lanes and pedestrian safety features to Prosperity Avenue is moving ahead, but a new high-density development along the Merrifield corridor could complicate the design.

At a public meeting on Monday (Jan. 27), the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) shared the latest updates on its road diet project, which would reduce the road from four to two lanes, add buffered bike lanes, and introduce pedestrian safety improvements in front of the Dunn Loring Metro station between Hilltop Road and Gallows Road.

A local homebuilder is looking to gauge city officials’ reaction to another mixed-use development proposal for Old Town Fairfax.

After purchasing the contracts for 4085, 4101 and 4103 Chain Bridge Road in Fairfax City, Oakton-based Christopher Companies has shared a concept plan with the city that would replace the existing office buildings with apartment and office buildings, townhouses and retail.

Comstock rethinks approach to planned senior living building at Reston Station

A search for an operator to run an independent living facility planned for Reston Station’s upcoming Midline district has apparently come up empty so far.

With demolition of the vacant office building currently on the site at 1831 Wiehle Avenue expected to begin this year, developer Comstock Companies is exploring the possibility of delivering age-restricted housing for seniors instead, according to an application submitted to Fairfax County last Thursday (Jan. 23).

Groundbreaking kicks off HITT HQ construction near West Falls Church Metro

HITT Contracting broke ground yesterday (Thursday) morning on its new headquarters at Virginia Tech’s Northern Virginia Center in Idylwood.

In development since 2019, the six-story, 270,000-square-foot building will serve as the centerpiece of a $100 million project aimed at transforming the campus into a hub for innovation and sustainable growth. Construction is set to begin this year, with the headquarters slated to open in early 2027.

County board allows denser development on site near Mosaic District

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved a comprehensive plan amendment last Tuesday (Jan. 14) that ultimately could lead to the redevelopment of the Alliance Center office condominiums adjoining the Mosaic District in Merrifield.

Though there’s no current development proposal on the table, the amendment would allow nearly 360 residential units with 60,000 square feet of ground-floor uses on the 3.2-acre site, which currently hosts two buildings with 24 aging commercial-condominium units, surrounded by surface parking.

Revised redevelopment plan for Commons of McLean approved by county board

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved an updated conceptual development plan yesterday (Tuesday) that will replace the Commons of McLean apartments (1640 Anderson Road) with a new McLean Crossing mixed-use complex.

The unanimous vote allows property owner LCOR to start moving toward final development plans for an 11-building compound that could add up to 2.72 million square feet of residential, commercial and retail space near the McLean Metro station.

Mental health services nonprofit buys Fairfax building for new HQ, supportive housing

With its current home being eyed for redevelopment, Pathway Homes is using its expected future displacement as an opportunity to reimagine its headquarters.

The nonprofit, which provides housing and other support services to adults with serious mental illnesses and disabilities, announced yesterday (Tuesday) that it has acquired a three-story office building at 4010 University Drive in Fairfax City.

Here’s when to expect the new development at Reston Station

This year promises to be a big one for Reston Station.

Most pieces of Reston Row, a new district expanding the development along Sunset Hills Road near the Wiehle Metro station, are on track to finish construction by the end of 2025, according to a spokesperson for the developer Comstock Companies.

Fairfax County is officially reviving long-gestating plans to redevelop the Crescent Apartments near Lake Anne in Reston.

At Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn’s request, the Board of Supervisors authorized staff today (Tuesday) to begin the process of conveying the 16.49-acre property at 1527 Cameron Crescent Drive to the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA).

Proposed housing projects near Jermantown Road win planning commission support

The Fairfax County Planning Commission gave its blessing last Wednesday (Jan. 8) to two proposed projects that could replace aging commercial buildings with housing on adjacent Oakton parcels.

The proposals to redevelop Redwood Plaza (10600 Arrowhead Drive) and a portion of the Flint Hill Office Park (10530 Rosehaven Street) will now go to the Board of Supervisors. A similar request for a parcel immediately to the north is in the pipeline and will be considered later this year.
