A strewn cigarette butt appears to be the cause of a two-alarm house fire in Springfield over the weekend.

The “improper disposal of smoking materials” caused more than $90,000 in damages to a house in the 7000 block of Hill Stream Court on Sunday (March 30), the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department said.

A truck caught fire after colliding with a sedan on I-66 in the Vienna area earlier this afternoon (Monday), requiring a shutdown of all westbound lanes.

Units with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to I-66 West prior to Nutley Street for the crash around 1:15 p.m., per scanner traffic.

The past week has been busy for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD), which is investigating the causes of incidents in Annandale, Bailey’s Crossroads and McLean.

Most recently, firefighters were dispatched at 12:13 a.m. today (Wednesday) to the 6600 block of Locust Way in Annandale for a house fire. Upon arriving, crews found “heavy fire” throughout the single-family home.

As Fairfax County officials work to fill an estimated $292.7 million budget shortfall in the next fiscal year, public safety services will bear a substantial brunt of potential cuts.

Of the $59.8 million in reductions proposed in the advertised budget, which was unveiled by County Executive Bryan Hill earlier this month, approximately $26.2 million will come from the police department, fire and rescue department, and sheriff’s office.

Plans to build a modern fire station to serve the Tysons area took a key step forward on Wednesday night (Feb. 5).

The Fairfax County Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend that the Board of Supervisors approve a number of zoning changes for a 4.05-acre site in the 8300 block of Jones Branch Drive that will serve as the future home of firefighters and paramedics of Fire Station 29.

The D.C. region is reeling in the aftermath of a crash involving an American Airlines passenger jet and a military helicopter near Reagan National Airport that officials say left no survivors.

Arriving from Witchita, Kansas, the airplane was making its descent when it collided with the helicopter over the Potomac River around 8:50 p.m. yesterday (Wednesday). The crash drew a massive emergency response that included personnel from Fairfax County’s police and fire departments.

Fairfax County police have recovered the bodies of two men who apparently drowned in a pond near the Staybridge Suites in Chantilly.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units, including boats, were dispatched to the 3900 block of Centerview Drive at 7:26 a.m. for a water rescue, according to scanner traffic.
