The Fairfax County Police Department is hoping to add a detective from the Town of Vienna to its ranks.

Under a reciprocal agreement set to be approved by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors tomorrow (Tuesday), the Vienna detective will specifically help investigate drug and vice crimes as part of the larger department’s Organized Crime and Narcotics division.

Local police are searching for a man who reportedly threatened to kidnap a woman’s child if she did not give up her belongings in Reston.

The man approached the woman near the 11900 block of Barrell Cooper Court in Reston and attempted to snatch her backpack. The suspect threatened to take her child if she did not give up the backpack, police said.

The Fairfax County Police Department’s drone unit has taken on new responsibilities and added a full-time drone program manager.

The drone unit now conducts more detailed work with the FCPD’s helicopter program, according to an FCPD news release. Among other tasks, the drone unit complements the helicopter program in crime scene and crash scene investigations, FCPD Second Lieutenant Brad Woehrlen wrote in a statement to FFXnow.

(Updated at 4:45 pm) Local police have arrested a man suspected of crashing a stolen car into a Lorton home earlier this morning at around 4:40 a.m.

Nico Anthony Doublet, 32, was arrested today (Thursday), after a community-led search.

Earlier: Local police are responding to an incident this evening at Springfield Mall where a man is reportedly “experiencing a crisis,” according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

An 80-year-old Vienna resident was charged in connection with a fatal pedestrian crash in McLean’s Kirby Road crosswalk.

Police believe Gamaathige Desoya was trying to make a left turn onto northbound Kirby Road but instead turned into the southbound lanes. The incident happened on August 12 around 6 a.m.

(Updated at 11:30 a.m.) A man was arrested at 10 p.m. last night after he barricaded himself and a woman in a home in Fair Oaks, prompting a police response.

Officers were currently on the scene in the 4100 block of Park Chase Drive, which is the Parkside at Fairfax Corner community yesterday afternoon and into the night.

Some broken lights have unexpected challenges for Fairfax County’s speed camera pilot program, which appears to be having an effect on drivers, based on early data.

For about a week in mid-July, the Winko-Matics — flashing lights that signal when a school zone is in effect — failed to turn on at three of the eight sites involved in the pilot, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
