Reston Regional Library is set to reopen on Sept. 16 at 10 a.m. after an 11-week closure for renovations.

The building — which is nearing the end of its life — underwent critical renovations throughout the summer, including ADA improvements for the main public restrooms, upgrades for all lighting fixtures, replacement of carpet in key areas, updates to public meeting rooms, and general paint, cleaning and blind repairs.

Woodrow Wilson Library in Bailey’s Crossroads will officially get renamed at the beginning of September following months of community requests.

The Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) Board of Trustees voted unanimously on July 10 to change the name to the Culmore Community Library to reflect the neighborhood where the library is located, replacing the former president’s moniker.

Sara Prohaska, marketing and communications director for the FCPL, confirmed that Hudson vacated the position she’d held for eight years on June 14. The Library Board of Trustees has begun the search for a new director in cooperation with the county’s Department of Human Resources.

Tomorrow (Friday) will be Reston residents’ last chance to visit their local library before it closes for the remainder of the summer.

Fairfax County Public Library announced this spring that the Reston Regional Library would close for approximately 10 weeks, starting Saturday, June 29, for renovations. Operating hours on Fridays are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., so any materials on hold should be picked up before then or redirected to another branch.

Reston Regional Library is slated for a complete renovation as part of the overall redevelopment of Reston Town Center North.

But after the potential RTC North developer unexpectedly withdrew from the project last year, Fairfax County is now looking at making some interim upgrades to the library at 11925 Bowman Towne Drive. The improvements are expected to extend the building’s lifespan for the next seven to ten years.

Fairfax County’s next budget could give its public libraries a little more spending money for books.

At the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday (March 19), Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn proposed allocating an additional $500,000 in the upcoming fiscal year 2025 budget to Fairfax County Public Library’s book collection.
