Even without taking into account the global economic havoc being wreaked by new tariffs, the Trump administration’s gutting of the federal workforce could have worse impacts on the D.C. region than Covid, Fairfax County authorities say.

A 20% reduction in the federal workforce could devastate the economy in Fairfax County, where approximately 80,000 residents — about 13% of the workforce — are employed by the federal government, according to updated data from the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA).

Construction takes off on United Airlines flight attendant training center in Chantilly

United Airlines is building a new facility to train its flight attendants based at Dulles International Airport and elsewhere in the D.C. region.

Construction is now underway on the 20,000-square-foot Inflight Training Center, a $16 million investment that’s expected to open sometime next year, the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) announced yesterday (Monday).

Canadian plane tech manufacturer to open Reston research facility

A Canadian company that makes electronic systems for airplanes is swooping into Reston.

CMC Electronics will invest $5 million to establish an office and research and development facility in Reston, bringing 89 new jobs with plans for more positions as it builds up its operations in the area, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced on Friday (Nov. 1).

Chantilly named third-best place for families to live in the U.S.

Fortune magazine has named Chantilly the third-best place for families to live out of 2,000 cities across the U.S.

This is the first time that Chantilly has appeared in the annual rankings, which began with 25 locations in 2022. The 2023 and 2024 rankings expanded to 50 communities — one from each state — with Alexandria representing Virginia last year.

Fairfax County office vacancy rate continues to rise

Despite steady growth in employment numbers, office vacancy rates in Fairfax County continue to rise.

Stephen Tarditi, director of market intelligence at the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA), presented recent data on office vacancies to the Board of Supervisors during an economic advisory committee meeting yesterday (Tuesday).

Reston IT consultant ranked as fastest-growing company in D.C. area

An information technology consulting firm based in Reston is growing faster than any other company in the D.C. area, according to the Washington Business Journal.

Goldschmitt and Associates topped the newspaper’s 2023 ranking of the 50 fastest-growing companies in the region, as determined by the average percentage of revenue growth it saw from 2020 to 2021 and 2021 to 2022.

The fastest-growing company in Fairfax County is a Tysons-based cybersecurity firm whose stated goal is to “fundamentally change” how organizations get technical expertise.

MOXFIVE claimed the 39th spot overall and the top spot for the security industry on the latest Inc. 5000, an annual ranking of the country’s most successful privately owned companies based on their revenue growth.

Space-centered cyber company moves HQ to Reston Town Center

Space-oriented cybersecurity company SpiderOak has expanded its web of operations to Reston Town Center.

The U.S.-owned and operated software company opened its Reston office (11911 Freedom Drive) last month.

California firm leases data center space in Reston

A West Coast company has officially leased data center space at 12100 Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston.

According to the Washington Business Journal, which first reported the deal, Backblaze, a San Mateo-based company, is occupying part of space that owned and run by CoreSite, a information technology company that’s based in Denver.

(Updated at 3:55 p.m. on 9/23/2022) A consultant that provides facial recognition technology and other identity verification services to the travel and security industries has selected Tysons as the site of its new global headquarters.

Drawn by Fairfax County’s “dynamic” workforce, Pangiam will establish a base at Valo Park (7950 Jones Branch Drive) with a $3.1 million investment, Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced this morning (Thursday).
