A dog was rescued after a fire in the Frying Pan area of Fairfax County broke out Wednesday morning (July 13), the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department reported yesterday (Thursday)

The fire — which was mostly controlled by two sprinklers in the apartment on the 2300 block of Rolling Fork Circle — was caused when combustible items near the burner of the electric stove caught fire, according to fire investigators.

The Town of Herndon is seeking up to an additional $22.1 million in state funding for the future extension of Worldgate Drive.

In materials prepared on July 12, town officials request the council’s blessing to include the project in the town’s application for the Virginia Department of Transportation’s six-year improvement program for fiscal years 2023-2028.

A major fixture in Fairfax County’s historic wagon trade is undergoing major repairs.

The county has begun demolishing and repairing the Historic Dranesville Tavern (11919 Leesburg Pike), which was built in the 1830s to serve the wagon trade that supplied the Piedmont area of Virginia. Crews have started a $191,000 project to root out termite damage in the building’s structure.

Since 1991, people outside the Town of Herndon have been able to take advantage of its parks and recreation scholarship program, which awards fee waivers to participants enrolled in federally-funded, low-income programs.

A proposal before the Herndon Town Council aims to restrict eligibility for that program to town residents. If adopted by the council, the move would align with neighboring jurisdictions that offer fee waivers to residents only.

Fairfax County police arrested the man near Reston around 2:20 p.m. yesterday (Thursday) after a roughly two-hour search that involved a helicopter, K9 unit, and the Herndon Police Department.

Metro remains noncommittal on an expected opening date for when phase two of the Silver Line will begin operations.

The 11.4-mile extension from Reston into Loudoun County is expected to open this fall. However, the $2.8 billion project has repeatedly missed estimated targets for opening, leading the transit agency to take a cautious approach to sharing a timeline for when rail service will officially begin.
