Led by a group of sprinters, the South County Stallions sped their way to an indoor track-and-field girls’ state championship.

South County High School in Lorton won the Virginia High School League Class 6 team title in Virginia Beach by a comfortable margin on Tuesday, March 11, amassing 88 points. The Robinson Rams from Fairfax were a distant second with 47.

For a fifth straight season, the South County Stallions had a strong showing in the annual George Long Holiday boys basketball tournament.

The Stallions (5-2) finished third with a 2-1 record, defeating the host Wakefield Warriors, 53-37, in the consolation game of the eight-team, three-day event at Wakefield High School.

The South County Stallions opened their boys basketball season with a 30-point home blowout victory Thursday night (Dec. 5).

The Stallions defeated a young Washington-Liberty Generals team of Arlington, 71-41, in non-district high-school action.

In three road games against perennial Patriot District high-school football powers from the close-proximity neighborhoods of Burke, Fairfax and Lorton this season, the undefeated Madison Warhawks (6-0) are 3-0 with blowout victories.


Countywide

When students arrive at Oakton High School, they will now encounter a historical marker honoring civil rights activist Lillian Blackwell, whose own children might not have been allowed inside when the school opened in 1967 if not for her advocacy.

Fairfax County officials unveiled the plaque detailing Blackwell’s legacy, including her fight against the segregation of local public schools and movie theaters, at a ceremony on Saturday (June 1) attended by some of her family members and the students who suggested her for the recognition.
