Fairfax County Democrats are once again asking voters to select a nominee for an empty House of Delegates seat on short notice.

The 17th House of Delegates District Democratic Committee will hold a firehouse primary this Sunday (Dec. 28) after House Speaker Don Scott scheduled a Jan. 20 special election to fill a seat vacated by Del. Mark Sickles on Wednesday (Dec. 24).

Virginia’s 11th House District will likely be represented by another Bulova, starting next year.

Democratic voters in the district nominated Gretchen M. Bulova in a quick firehouse primary today (Tuesday) to succeed her husband, David Bulova, after the delegate resigned last Friday (Dec. 12) to accept an appointment in Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger’s administration.

With mere days to campaign, voters will have only one chance to hear from those seeking the Democratic nod in the race to succeed David Bulova in the House of Delegates before heading to the polls Tuesday (Dec. 16).

Mackenzie’s Tunes and Tonics in Fairfax City (3950 University Drive, Suite 210) will host a candidate forum from 2-4 p.m. today (Sunday) featuring the five candidates seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination, party officials announced.

Vienna Mayor Linda Colbert will serve a third term, and Sandra Allen emerged as the odd person out in last night’s Vienna Town Council elections.

Pursuing her first reelection bid after narrowly winning in 2023, Allen was one of seven candidates vying for the council’s six seats. She received 3,146 votes, trailing the next lowest vote-getter, Dann Nash, who secured 3,917 votes, according to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections.

Democrat Abigail Spanberger won the governor’s race in Virginia today (Tuesday), defeating Republican Winsome Earle-Sears, the Associated Press declared at 7:58 p.m.

Spanberger will succeed Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who is not allowed to run for a second consecutive term. Her victory aligns with recent voting patterns in Virginia, which picks its governors the year after a presidential election and tends to elect someone of the opposite party of the president.

Voters across Virginia are now casting their Election Day ballots, but many in Fairfax County have no need for a last-minute trip to their polling place.

Just shy of 190,000 voters in Fairfax County cast a ballot during the early voting period, which ran from Sept. 19 through 5 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 1). That’s a jump of 7.4% compared to 2021, which is the last time the three statewide races were on the ballot.

The Fairfax County Government Center will be open tomorrow (Tuesday) for election voting and little else.

Most government facilities will be closed for Election Day, which is a designated holiday for the county. Operations affected by the closures include all Fairfax County Public Library branches and Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) programs.
