Wegmans is officially opening its doors to the public tomorrow (Wednesday) in Brookfield Properties’ new Halley Rise development.

The 85,000-square-foot grocery store is located at 11950 Hopper Street and will officially open at 9 a.m.

Most of the store’s 425 employees were hired locally, according to the company.

Katie Sullivan, the store’s manager, told FFXnow that the Reston location is unique because it was adapted to an urban-focused environment.

“This store is unique in that it’s an urban-style Wegmans in a mixed-use development. We’ve automated the shopping experience at this store, with a unique layout that is built for the urban environment,” Sullivan told FFXnow.

The Reston location also has a self-serve coffee bar — the first in any other Wegmans store in the state. A Burger Bar is also available through the company’s online ordering app.

The store has the traditional restaurant section, which is a staple of the Wegmans’ brand. Items on the menu include fresh sushi, pizza, salads, sandwiches, packaged subs and other prepackaged meals.

In celebration of its opening, the grocery store has committed $20,000 through donations and event partnerships in the Reston area.

Parking is accessible in a structured parking garage below the grocery store. Residential units tower above the grocery store, which is accessible from the Reston Town Center Metro station.

Wegmans Food Markets, Inc has 109 stores along the East Coast, including ones in Fairfax, Chantilly and Capital One Center in Tysons.

The grocery store is an anchor tenant of Brookfield’s development, which will transform a 36-acre office park near the Metro station with 3.5 million square feet of housing, retail, offices and open spaces. Up to 1,500 residential units, 250,000 square feet of retail, and 1.5 million square feet of office space are planned.

Halley Rise — a major mixed use development at the door of the Reston Town Center Metro station — will debut its inaugural Halley Rise Fall Festival on Oct. 22.

The event, which includes live music, food and activities, also kicks off the introduction of the Farm at Halley Rise, an urban farm by Up Top Acres that grows food and donates products to organizations that work to reduce food insecurity.

Just under half an acre in size, the farm includes more than 30 vegetable, herb and fruit crops, along with beehives, a native flower garden, a rain garden and a meadow. The farm is intended to provide Cornerstones Food pantry and other local food security organizations with produce.

“At Up Top Acres, our goal is to create productive farms and gardens that foster a sense of community,” Up Top Acres co-founder Kathleen O’Keefe said. “We’re excited to welcome the Farm at Halley Rise into our portfolio and partner with Brookfield to reduce food insecurity and work toward a more equitable food ecosystem.”

Brookfield Properties broke ground on the project in 2019 and has since focused on building The Edmund, a 353-unit apartment building that includes a pool, terrace, and fitness center. The apartment building, which will house Wegmans on the ground floor, is slated to open in spring 2023.

Robert Swennes, Brookfield’s head of the mid-Atlantic and southeast region, said that the festival is part of an ongoing effort to make the development a vibrant community and destination in Reston.

“We are excited to welcome friends and families from across Northern Virginia for a day full of autumnal festivities, live music, delicious food and more, plus the grand opening of our new urban farm — all together should make for a wonderful celebration at Halley Rise,” Swennes wrote in a statement.

The festival will include scavenger hunts, a pumpkin painting station, a bouquet making stand, farm tours, lawn games and performances by local bluegrass band High & Wides. Pepe by Jose Andres, a food truck, will also serve up Spanish flat sandwiches.

At full build-out, Halley Rise will bring 1,600 residential units, 1.9-million-square-feet of office space, 240,000 square feet of retail, five acres of open space and associated infrastructure to the area.

A spokesperson for Brookfield Properties told FFXnow that the company plans to find other ways to engage the local community.

“Following this year’s event, we will continue to explore ways to offer family-friendly programming for the community,” the spokesperson said.

A second round of hiring is underway for more 250 part-time positions at the future Wegmans Food Markets in Reston.

The 85,000-square-foot store is located at the Halley Rise mixed-use development at the intersection of Reston Parkway and Sunrise Valley Drive. Marcie Rivera, a spokesperson for Wegmans, tells FFXnow that an opening date has not yet been determined.

“But we plan to open sometime in early 2023,” Rivera says. Early 2023 has been the target for the project since it began.

An in-person hiring event for all positions is slated to take place tomorrow (Wednesday) from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Reston YMCA (12196 Sunset Hills Road). Applicants should complete an online application in advance of the event.

“We’re looking for applicants who have a passion for food and are eager to make a difference for our customers and the community,” said Reston Store Manager Katie Sullivan. “The ideal candidate also shares our core values of respect, caring, and high standards. If you match these criteria, we can teach you all the other skills you need to thrive in our company.”

The Reston location is the company’s 15th store in the state. It will employ more than 400 people, most of whom are new hires and will be hired locally.

Job openings range from culinary roles to customer service representatives. Hiring for full-time jobs began this spring and continues.

The long-anticipated opening of Wegmans in Reston is nearing, as the grocer begins hiring for the 85,000-square-foot business.

Wegmans is set to open in early 2023 at the new Halley Rise development, a $1.4 million mixed-use neighborhood located at the intersection of Reston Parkway and Sunrise Valley Drive.

The company has begun hiring for 150 full-time positions ahead of the opening. Positions range from entry-level management to culinary roles like chefs, prep cooks and dishwashers. Overall, the grocer is expected to employ more than 400 people, most of which will be hired locally.

The new store will include a market cafe, coffee shop and The Burger Bar.

“We bring new employees on board to begin training quickly after they’re hired,” said Store Manager Katie Sullivan. “Our commitment to in-depth training is the main reason we begin the hiring process so early. These jobs provide competitive pay with industry-leading benefits, flexible scheduling, and most importantly, a great place to work.”

Applications will not be accepted at the construction site, and hiring for part-time positions is expected to begin at a later date.

The grocer is part of Brookfield Properties’ transformation of a 36-acre office park at the door of the Reston Town Center Metro station into a mixed-use neighborhood with 3.5 million square feet of housing, retail, modern offices and open spaces. Up to 1,500 residential units, 250,000 square feet of retail, and 1.5 million square feet of office space are planned.

In 2020, Wegmans anticipated it would open before the end of this year, but the company later revised that timeline to early 2023.
