Reston will usher in Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of summer by celebrating the grand reopening of Lake Thoreau pool.
The swimming pool at 2040 Upper Lake Drive will welcome its first patrons since closing in 2020 for renovations with a party this Friday (May 24) from 4-7 p.m.
“All guests can take advantage of pool games, refreshments, and much more,” Reston Association, which operates the facility, said in its event announcement. “Following the official ribbon-cutting of the pool, DJ Theo will be on hand to provide music to kick off the summer.”
The festivities will include free snow cones for all attendees, according to a presentation that RA CEO Mac Cummins is slated to give the Board of Directors tomorrow (Thursday).
No registration is required for the event, but visitors will need to bring their recreation passes, which are now free for RA members, to get access to the pool.
RA wrapped up construction on the new Lake Thoreau pool in December after a development process prolonged by permitting delays, rising material costs, contractor availability, unanticipated repairs and other issues.
With an estimated cost of $3.5 million, the renovation introduced a pool with six lap lanes, a larger 25-space parking lot, a redesigned pool deck, expanded and relocated bathhouses, an overlook with a pollinator garden, and accessibility improvements.
The Lake Thoreau facility is one of eight pools set to open this weekend as part of RA’s summer pool season, which kicked off on May 11 with the heated pools at North Shore and Ridge Heights. The Dogwood, Glade, Golf Course Island, Lake Newport and North Hills facilities are scheduled to open at 11 a.m. on Saturday (May 25).
This will be the first summer since 2020 where RA can open all of its pools. The organization announced on May 17 that work on a new spray feature at Shadowood pool (2201 Springwood Drive) is now complete, keeping the renovation project on track to finish in time for a scheduled grand reopening.
