A construction contractor that worked on Inova Fairfax Hospital and Amazon’s second headquarters in Arlington recently took over an office building in Reston for its new base.

Muller Companies officially moved into its new 30,000-square-foot headquarters at 1910 Association Drive on April 15, according to owner and CEO David Muller.

The move from the company’s previous headquarters in Falls Church was prompted by a need for more space, as it shifted from a work-at-home policy instituted when COVID-19 hit to a hybrid schedule, Muller told FFXnow. The firm also anticipates hiring up to 100 more people this year.

“We needed a lot more space,” Muller said in a statement. “After an extensive search, taking into account the available properties and their locations, we decided that both our new HQ’s accomodations and its location in Reston would be the best fit for us.”

The company was drawn to the property at 1910 Association Drive in particular, because it could lease the entire three-story building, and its proximity to the Wiehle Metro station would give employees relatively easy access to transit.

Muller says the area’s “vibrant community” for both residents and businesses was also a plus, potentially helping his company retain current workers and recruit new ones. Muller currently has about 200 employees, including 75 positions added since the beginning of the pandemic.

“There is so much development happening in Reston,” Muller said by email. “The city is home to some of the top tech firms, nearby data centers, etc. and as Reston’s workforce grows, it will continue to attract potential new hires.”

A “portion” of the 100 workers expected to join Muller Companies by the end of this year will be dedicated to a new business that its CEO is planning to launch soon.

Formerly a design and construction manager for Peterson Companies, which is now based in Fair Lakes, Muller launched his own business in 2007 with two pickup trucks, a couple of employees and a skid steer, per the company’s website. Initially called Muller Erosion Control, Muller Inc. focused on providing that service to site development contractors before expanding its scope starting in 2010.

In addition to erosion and sediment control, the company now handles site development, utilities, green infrastructure, stormwater maintenance, and pipe cleaning, repairs and installations, among other construction-related services.

According to a spokesperson, Muller Inc.’s projects have included the White House rose garden, the Washington Monument, the Pentagon and Inova’s hospital and the Schar Cancer Institute in Merrifield. It was also the first contractor to break ground on Amazon’s HQ2 project in Crystal City, which recently began utility work on its paused second phase.

Muller also owns DFM Development Services, a consulting firm that assists developers with navigating regulatory and permitting processes. DFM is also now headquartered at 1910 Association Drive.

Several properties on Association Drive, including Muller Companies’ new building, are being considered for mixed-use development under a site-specific plan amendment proposal submitted to Fairfax County in 2022. The county is reviewing that and other potential land use changes in Reston as part of a Reston Transit Station Area study initiated in April 2023.

This story was updated to clarify the distinction between Muller Companies and its subsidiary, Muller Inc., and to correct the name of DFM Development Services.
