Two drivers were arrested this morning (Tuesday) for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol in connection to a crash on I-495 in Annandale that injured a state trooper.
According to the Virginia State Police, one of its troopers was dispatched to the Capital Beltway near the exit to Little River Turnpike around 3 a.m. for a sedan that had reportedly stopped in a northbound lane.
The trooper was trying to get the driver to exit the sedan or move it to the highway’s shoulder when a Jeep Cherokee crashed into a tractor-trailer that had stopped in the travel lane blocked by the sedan, the VSP said.
More from the press release:
The impact of that crash caused the Jeep to spin around and strike the Trooper’s patrol car, which then struck the sedan, which then struck the trooper…as the trooper was standing next to the driver’s side of the sedan.
The trooper sustained minor injuries and was transported to Fairfax INOVA Hospital for evaluation. The trooper’s patrol car was positioned behind the sedan with its emergency lights activated.
The driver of the sedan, who was still seated inside the vehicle at the time it was struck, was also treated for minor injuries sustained in the crash.
The sedan driver — identified by police as a 43-year-old woman from Albright, West Virginia — has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs, obstruction, drug possession, refusal of a blood or breath test and improperly stopping a vehicle on a highway.
The Jeep driver, a 35-year-old woman from Arlington, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the state police.
The drivers were both taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
