A woman was killed and a man got injured in a crash just south of Route 29 in Centreville on Monday (June 24), police say.

Officers responded to the intersection of Braddock and Pickwick roads around 9:50 p.m. after getting a call that two pedestrians had been hit by a driver, the Fairfax County Police Department reported in a press release published last night (Tuesday).

Lubia Marisol Vasquez Mateo, a 46-year-old Clifton resident, and an unidentified adult man were struck by the driver of an eastbound 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee who was trying to turn left from Braddock to Pickwick, according to the FCPD.

“Mateo was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the other pedestrian sustained injuries considered non-life-threatening,” the FCPD said.

Mateo died at the hospital.

The FCPD says a preliminary investigation by Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives indicates that Mateo and the man were both crossing Pickwick Road outside a crosswalk at the time of the crash.

“Detectives do not believe speed or alcohol are factors in the crash and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash,” the police department said.

Mateo is the fifth pedestrian killed in a traffic crash on Fairfax County roads this year, the FCPD says. Two people were killed on Richmond Highway in February, there was a fatal hit-and-run in Mount Vernon on March 10, and most recently, a Woodbridge resident died after he was hit near the Huntington Metro station on May 24.

The Virginia State Police also reported two fatal pedestrian crashes on the Capital Beltway on March 10.
