The family of a Clifton woman who was killed last week while crossing Pickwick Road in Centreville has launched an online fundraiser.
Set up by the nephew of Lubia Marisol Vasquez Mateo, the Gofundme page says the family is seeking financial assistance to cover various expenses, including memorial costs, travel costs and the medical bills of her partner, Jose Vasquez, who was injured in the crash.
As of press time, the fundraiser had gotten $2,056 in donations toward a $25,000 goal.
“My aunt Lubia Vasquez had such a kind soul; she was a wonderful woman with a big heart and was hardworking and committed to everything, especially family,” organizer Christian Vasquez wrote. “She leaves behind her loving family and four kids, who are trying to navigate through this period of mourning and make some challenging decisions.”
Lubia and Jose were walking across Pickwick around 9:50 p.m. on Monday, June 24 when the driver of a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee turned left from eastbound Braddock Road and hit them, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
They were both taken to a hospital, where Lubia died. She was 46 years old.
Jose sustained injuries that police described as non-life-threatening, but the fundraiser, which was created on Thursday (June 27), says he was “currently left in critical condition at the hospital.”
Jose has been “grieving and devastated over the traumatic accident that happened to him and my aunt,” Christian Vasquez wrote.
In addition to the cost of Lubia’s memorial, the Gofundme donations will be used to pay for travel expenses so her body can be repatriated to Guatemala, Jose’s hospital expenses, and attorney fees “as we seek justice for the fatal accident,” the page says.
FFXnow didn’t receive a response to a request for comment by press time.
“The remainder will be used to support my family during this difficult time,” Christian Vasquez wrote. “We sincerely appreciate any donations that we may receive from you all. Thank you so much and god bless.”
