A truck carrying metal debris crashed on Nutley Street near the Pan Am Shopping Center in Merrifield this morning (Tuesday), requiring an extended closure for clean-up.
Fairfax County police officers and Fire and Rescue units, including a hazmat team, were dispatched to Nutley Street at Route 29 around 11:20 a.m. for a report of a flipped tractor-trailer, according to scanner traffic on Open MHz.
All of Nutley Street is currently closed between Route 29 and Saintsbury Drive so crews can clear debris and gas spilled by the truck, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
“The driver was not injured,” the Fairfax County Police Department said in a 12:16 p.m. tweet. “Crews are working to clean up the roadway. Please use an alternate route.”
Per the scanner, the hazmat team reported at 11:30 a.m. that the truck was “actively leaking” 160 gallons of diesel fuel, adding that they’d managed to keep the gas “out of the storm drain so far.”
An FCPD spokesperson confirmed that hazmat teams were called to assist with the clean-up because the truck is “leaking gas into the roadway.”
The closure is expected to last three hours, per a Fairfax Alert sent out at 12:06 p.m.
