Northbound South George Mason Drive in Bailey’s Crossroads has been closed for over 12 hours due to a major water main break.
The Fairfax County Police Department reported the break near 7313 South George Mason Drive near Route 7 (Leesburg Pike) in the Skyline neighborhood at 9:39 p.m. yesterday (Tuesday). Water can be seen gushing up from under the street in a video shared by the department.
“Northbound lanes are expected to be shut down for an extended period of time while crews work to fix the situation,” the FCPD said. “Expect early morning delays.”
The road remained closed through the morning rush hour, with crews continuing to work to repair the break, the FCPD public affairs bureau confirmed shortly after 9 a.m.
The main break was caused by a “broken valve” connected to a fire hydrant, Fairfax Water spokesperson Susan Miller says. As indicated on the utility’s main break and leaks map, no customers were affected.
Repairs to the pipe are complete, but work is still going on the road. There’s no estimate yet for when those repairs might be complete, according to the police.
