A 33-year-old woman was shot and killed by a Fairfax County police officer this morning (Monday) at the VY Reston Heights apartment building.
Officers were dispatched to the residences at 11830 Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston around 10:03 a.m. for a welfare check, according to the county’s police scanner. Officers reported “shots fired” at 10:17 a.m.
A woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and later pronounced dead, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. The police officer was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
The woman allegedly slashed the police officer in the face with a knife and advanced toward the police officer several times before the officer discharged his weapon, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said in an update at 12:16 p.m. He described her as a “mental health consumer.”
According to Davis, who said he reviewed body-worn camera footage earlier this morning, the police officer asked the woman to back up at least eight times.
The FCPD has interacted with the same woman several times, including an incident yesterday (Sunday) where she reportedly yelled at a man walking a dog.
The Reston Heights apartment building was also the site of a shooting in Gold’s Gym last month.
Officers are in the 11800 block of Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston for an officer-involved shooting.
