Two local businesses are partnering up to host a food drive in Reston next month.

New Trail Cycling & Strength, the independent fitness studio in Lake Anne Plaza, and The Reston Letter, an online and print community newsletter about Reston, will collect donations to support Food for Neighbors. The drive is hosted by New Trail.

Food for Neighbors is a local nonprofit organization that aims to feed students who struggle with hunger after school, on weekends and during school breaks.

During the food drive, which will begin on Oct. 1, grocery donations can be dropped off at New Trail (1641B Washington Plaza North) during class time. Accepted items include individually packaged food, such as instant noodles, fruit cups, bars, pasta entrees, and more, as well as household items like deodorant, bar soap, menstrual pads and Ziploc bags.

“Through my work volunteering at my kids’ schools I discovered the alarming number of students that rely on food from FCPS and local non-profits,” New Trail owner and Reston resident Liz Kamp said in a press release. “It’s important to support the efforts of organizations like Food For Neighbors and their work to feed our local kids. Without these organizations, many students would wonder where their next meal will come from.”

New Trail also plans to donate $10 from every new customer package or membership throughout the month to Food for Neighbors.

The food drive will end with a coffee hour at New Trail during classes on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 8-11 a.m. Representatives from Food for Neighbors and The Reston Letter will be present.

“New Trail will be accepting food donations all morning long and new customers are encouraged to come and try a class that morning,” the business said. “New Trail offers classes at 8:00am and 9:30am that day.”
