Merrifield’s Pan Am Shopping Center has been renamed

Pan Am Shopping Center in Merrifield is getting a new name to go with its modernizing look.

The 228,000-square-foot, Safeway-anchored shopping center will now be called Providence Place, a nod to its location within Fairfax County’s Providence District, Federal Realty Investment Trust, the property owner, announced today (Monday).

“This name change and branding will align with new aesthetics featured in the renovation while redefining the character of the Shopping Center with ties to its community,” Federal Realty said in a press release.

The property owner began renovating the shopping center at Nutley Street and Route 29 in June after pausing plans for a major redevelopment that would’ve added housing and new outdoor amenities.

More on the renovation from the press release:

These upgrades elevate the customer experience through a variety of enhancements, including a refreshed color palette, façade upgrades, a new canopy ceiling with updated lighting, and the addition of two trellis features complemented by new furniture. The property will also benefit from enhanced landscaping, the introduction of mural art and graphics, the installation of bike racks, and renovated signage.

Federal Realty, which has owned the shopping center since 1993, says the name change will be reflected in new signage and a logo that includes “design elements inspired by the architectural detail found on the historic Fairfax County Courthouse,” which can be found in the heart of nearby Fairfax City.

The company anticipates completing the renovation by the end of this year. All of the restaurants and shops in Providence Place remain open.

“We are excited to modernize the shopping center providing our customers with an enriched experience,” Federal Realty Senior Vice President Deirdre Johnson said. “We look forward to unveiling the newly rebranded Providence Place which is a nod to the community and history of the area while providing an exceptional experience for shopping, dining, and personal services.”
