Police have arrested a 25-year-old man in connection with Sunday night’s shooting at Worldgate Centre in Herndon.

Mohamed Abdalla was arrested and charged last night (Monday) with four felony charges of malicious wounding, two counts of abduction and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, the Town of Herndon Police Department announced.

According to the HPD, a police officer was on patrol when he heard gunshots coming from the shopping center shortly after 7:30 pm. on Sunday (Oct. 6). As the officer approached the area, he saw a car speed away and began following the vehicle on the Dulles Toll Road after a pursuit was authorized.

“While in pursuit, the officer lost sight of the vehicle, and the pursuit was terminated,”

Around the same time, police received a 911 call reporting a victim with multiple gunshot wounds in the Worldgate parking lot. The victim was hospitalized but is now reported to be in stable condition after undergoing surgery, police said.

Police were reportedly able to identify the suspect after a witness returned to the scene, saying that she and a child were in the car that left the scene.

“They were able to safely escape. The car was recovered in Reston later Sunday night,” the HPD said.

After getting information from the witness, law enforcement searched for Abdalla throughout Herndon. The Fairfax County Police Department’s SWAT team ultimately arrested him at the 1000 block of Kings Court.

Police said the victim and suspect know each other but didn’t specify the nature of their relationship.

Now in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, Abdalla was arraigned today and is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing at 2 p.m. on Jan. 29, according to Fairfax County General District Court records.

“No further details will be released at this time, due to the ongoing investigation,” the HPD said.
