An Oakton man has died after he was hit by a driver while riding an electric bicycle in the Fair Oaks area yesterday (Wednesday), the Fairfax County Police Department said in a news release today.
Officers responded to the intersection of West Ox Road and Tilton Valley Drive at 12:14 p.m. for a crash involving a bicyclist who was struck by a gray Kia sedan, according to police scanner traffic.
The FCPD reported on social media at the time that the bicyclist, who has now been identified as 89-year-old Richard Albrecht, was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. Now, the department says he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Southbound West Ox Road was closed to traffic while Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives investigated.
Based on that preliminary investigation, detectives believe Albrecht was cycling west on Tilton Valley Drive and was turning left onto southbound West Ox Road when he crashed into a Kia Optima that was traveling south on West Ox Road in the right lane.
“The driver of the Kia remained on scene and was uninjured,” the FCPD said. “Preliminarily, speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the crash.”
Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles data indicates that this is Fairfax County’s first fatal crash involving a bicyclist since 2021, when there were three fatalities. Cyclists were killed that year just outside of Centreville, in the Huntington area and in McLean.
