Fairfax County police are investigating a late September crash in Seven Corners that turned fatal this weekend.

Glen Simmons, 57, died on Sunday (Oct. 13) — almost three weeks after he was struck by a driver while walking on Patrick Henry Drive shortly before 8 p.m. on Sept. 25, the Fairfax County Police Department announced yesterday (Monday).

According to the FCPD, Simmons was walking in the southbound lanes of Patrick Henry Drive near Arlington Blvd when the southbound driver of a Kia Forte hit him. Though his condition wasn’t considered life-threatening, he was later pronounced dead at a hospital “from injuries sustained in the crash,” police said.

Simmons wasn’t in a crosswalk when he got hit, the FCPD says.

“Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors for the driver and are under investigation for the pedestrian,” the FCPD said in a news release. “The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated.”

The same intersection was the site of a two-car crash in April 2023 that killed one woman and injured two other people, including a driver who was charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Fairfax County saw a spike in pedestrian fatalities during the last couple weeks in September. Now, five people have died from crashes ranging from Richmond Highway in Hybla Valley to Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield, Hunter Mill Road in Oakton and Route 29 in Centreville.

Based on preliminary Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles data, which doesn’t yet include four of the reported deaths from September, there have been 15 pedestrians killed in vehicle crashes in Fairfax County so far in 2024, already surpassing last year’s total of 10 fatalities.
