A pedestrian was killed by a driver who fled on Richmond Highway near Mount Vernon Plaza this morning (Thursday).
Fairfax County police officers were dispatched around 6:47 a.m. to Richmond Highway at Woodlawn Trail in Hybla Valley for a crash that left a man on the ground with “serious head trauma,” according to scanner traffic.
“They have a lot of bystanders over there. Not sure which direction, but they have that guy surrounded,” an officer said.
The man was declared dead at the scene. Police weren’t immediately able to obtain a description of the vehicle that was involved in the crash beyond that it might have some “front end damage,” per the scanner.
Southbound Richmond Highway (Route 1) was shut down at Belvoir Drive for an investigation by Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives, the Fairfax County Police Department tweeted at 7:14 a.m.
“Please use an alternate route,” the FCPD said.
All lanes reopened shortly before noon, police announced, but an investigation into the crash continues.
This is the fourth pedestrian fatality on Fairfax County roads within the past week, following a crash on Old Keene Mill Road in Springfield last Thursday (Sept. 19) and crashes in Oakton and Centreville on Saturday (Sept. 21).
Southbound Route 1 is closed at Belvoir Dr. CRU detectives are enroute to investigate.
