A Springfield man was arrested yesterday (Wednesday) in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a motorcyclist in May.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, detectives determined that Michael Burghardt, 46, was driving a 2022 BMW M440i north in the southbound lanes of Rolling Road when he hit a southbound motorcyclist near Delong Drive in Newington on May 12.

Burghardt allegedly fled the scene before police arrived around 5:18 a.m. The motorcyclist, Woodbridge resident Cornell Parish III, was transported to a hospital where he died. He was 32 years old.

At the time of the crash, the FCPD said detectives were investigating whether speed or alcohol were factors. Their conclusions aren’t addressed in today’s update, but the department did announce that Burghardt has been charged with manslaughter and felony hit and run.

Burghardt is currently in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center with a bond hearing scheduled for 8:30 a.m. tomorrow (Friday). A preliminary hearing has been set for Feb. 4, per the Fairfax County General District Court records.

Court records show that Burghardt previously paid a $114 fine for a speeding incident on Oct. 31, 2015, when he apparently drove 74 mph in a 55-mph zone.
