Dozens of local golfers will attempt to qualify next week for Girls State Open competition

Female competitors will take the spotlight for the remainder of the 2024 Virginia High School League golf season.

Beginning Monday (Oct. 21), players throughout Northern Virginia and across the commonwealth will participate in state-tournament qualifying events. The following Monday (Oct. 28), those who earned berths will play in the Girls State Open for all enrollment classifications combined at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.

On Oct. 21, players from Arlington and Fairfax counties and the city of Alexandria will compete for the top 15 percent of the spots entered in the field at the regional qualifying event at Twin Lakes Golf Course on Union Mill Road in Clifton. The field could consist of as many as six dozen players.

Players participating from the recent Virginia High School League’s Class 6 state champion Langley Saxons team will be Sarah Wang, Alexa Green and Gracie Kim. Lauren Wood and Olivia Wood from McLean High also are eligible to compete. Green and Wang also played in last season’s qualifier.

Raquel Walker and Erin Mullin of Robinson Secondary School are expected to be in the field again. Walker finished second individually in the recent Class 6 state tournament, and was fourth in last season’s state qualifier, also held at Twin Lakes.

In order to qualify for the event, a player had to record a score of 45 or lower in a nine-hole competition at some point this season.
