Flint Hill, Potomac School have catching up to do in Va. private-school football poll

The first statewide Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Division I private-school weekly high-school football poll for the 2024 season has been released, with no local teams ranked among the top six.

The Potomac School Panthers (4-2) and Flint Hill Huskies (1-5) received votes, but did not make the VISAA ranking.

The St. Michael the Archangel High School team (6-1) from Fredericksburg is ranked No. 1 and Benedictine (5-2) of Richmond No. 2.

The poll is used to help determine the four teams that will participate in the VISAA Division I state tournament.

Flint Hill played in last season’s state tourney as the No. 4 seed. Benedictine is the defending champion. Potomac School last played in the state tournament in 2022, also as a fourth seed.

The poll will continue for the remainder of the regular season, which lasts another three weeks. Flint Hill and Potomac School each likely would have to win their final three games to have any chance of earning a playoff berth.

Flint Hill plays St. Michael the Archangel this coming weekend. The Huskies have previously lost to Benedictine, No. 3-ranked Trinity Episcopal and No. 1-ranked Blue Ridge of Division II this season.

Potomac School has an upcoming game against No. 2-ranked North Cross of Division II.

The private-school teams Bishop O’Connell Knights, Bishop Ireton Cardinals, Episcopal Maroon and St. Paul VI Catholic Saints of Northern Virginia do not participate in the Division I state rankings or playoffs.
