An independent investigation into allegations of improper student-athlete recruitment practices by the football programs at Hayfield Secondary School and Fairfax High School has concluded.

Chicago law firm Baker McKenzie’s report confirmed that both programs violated the Virginia High School League’s (VHSL) eligibility rules in 2024, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid announced yesterday (Wednesday).

Having successfully integrated boys volleyball and girls wrestling into its offerings, Fairfax County Public Schools appears to be eyeing girls’ flag football next.

There has been conversation among the division’s directors of student activities about potentially moving forward with the sport for the 2025-2026 school year, Superintendent Michelle Reid told the Fairfax County School Board at its March 13 meeting.

But for those now mourning the 63-year-old Wright, who unexpectedly died of cardiac arrest on Feb. 17, his coaching abilities aren’t what they remember the most. Instead, it was how he lived his life that took center stage.

As some high-school senior football players at the Flint Hill School have recently made commitments to play the sport at the next level, at least three others were freshmen members of college squads this past fall season.

After a couple of seasons of inactivity on the football field, Alex Jreige was back in action this past fall.

The Madison High School graduate was a sophomore runningback for the Division I State University of New York University at Albany Great Danes team. The 5-8, 210-pounder played in seven games.

Two have moved on to college sports, while one remains at Oakton High School, but all three Toole-family siblings are plenty busy and productive in athletics.

Girls basketball and softball player Sophie Toole is a junior standout in both sports at Oakton, currently helping the hoop team to a 15-1 record this winter season. She leads the team in many statistical categories.

Eight players from Fairfax County high schools were members of the Hampden-Sydney College football team during the fall season.

Three of the players were significant contributors for the Division III Virginia team that finished with a 5-5 overall record and 3-4 in conference play.

Madison High School graduate Connor Barry had a productive season for the Christopher Newport University football team during the fall.

The sophomore starting quarterback completed 68 percent of his passes and averaged 195 yards per game throwing the ball for the Division III Captains.

The process took longer and became more involved than hoped, but Ivan Maric eventually achieved his goal of becoming a place-kicker in college football.

The McLean High School graduate was the starting kicker during the 2024 season for the Division III University of Mount Union football team (14-1) in Alliance, Ohio — a squad that finished second in the NCAA playoffs.

During his high-school football career for the Langley Saxons, Tre Vasiliadis gained more than 4,000 all-purpose yards over four years.

In college, Vasiliadis came oh so close to  that 4,000-yard all-purpose milestone, as well.
