Madison graduate has impactful season for college football team

After a couple of seasons of inactivity on the football field, Alex Jreige was back in action this past fall.

The Madison High School graduate was a sophomore runningback for the Division I State University of New York University at Albany Great Danes team. The 5-8, 210-pounder played in seven games.

Jreige carried the ball 37 times, rushing for 191 yards and a touchdown. He also caught two passes for seven yards.

The best and busiest game for Jreige came in the Great Danes’ final regular-season contest against Hampton. He carried 21 times for 110 yards and a touchdown.

His scoring run was a 53-yarder to the right side in the fourth quarter, which helped tie the high-scoring contest at 34.

Jreige later had a 13-yard run in the victory and a couple of other short-yard gains to help run out the clock and cement Albany’s 41-34 victory.

His next best game came against Rhode Island, when Jreige rushed for 63 yards on 13 carries and caught two passes, one for a touchdown.

His scoring pass covered six yards in the first quarter, helping Albany build a 10-0 lead in an eventual 20-17 loss.

Jreige was playing his first season for Albany. He spent the previous two campaigns as a member of the Old Dominion University team in Virginia, but did not play. He transferred to Albany for the 2024 season.

At Madison, Jreige had a standout senior season when he rushed for 1,703 yards and 30 touchdowns. He helped lead the Warhawks to Concorde District and 6D North Region championships and a second-place finish in the Virginia High School League Class 6 state tournament.

For his high-school career, Jreige ran for more than 3,600 yards.

He also played on the varsity baseball team at Madison, helping his team win a state championship in 2021.
