Vienna leaders are taking a stand against the latest proposal to come out of Fairfax County Public Schools’ systemwide boundary review.

The Vienna Town Council unanimously approved a resolution on Monday (Oct. 27) opposing a boundary adjustment that would assign an estimated 91 students within the town’s limits to Marshall High School in Idylwood instead of the local James Madison High School.

A young Oakton Cougars squad continued an established tradition by winning another Concorde District girls gymnastics championship.

Oakton High won a fifth straight title, by fractions, over the Chantilly Chargers, finishing first with a 139.625 team score. Chantilly had 139.175. The Madison Warhawks were third at 137.025.

After a couple of seasons of inactivity on the football field, Alex Jreige was back in action this past fall.

The Madison High School graduate was a sophomore runningback for the Division I State University of New York University at Albany Great Danes team. The 5-8, 210-pounder played in seven games.

It took a bit, but once the Oakton Cougars “calmed down” they took control of the road game against their biggest neighborhood basketball rival en route to a comfortable victory.

After trailing 17-12 early in the second quarter, Oakton (15-1, 3-1) rallied to defeat the Madison Warhawks, 56-34, Friday (Jan. 24) in a Concorde District girls high-school game.

Much travel will be involved over the next month for teams participating and spectators attending some of the upcoming girls and boys postseason track-and-field meets for local high-school squads.

That has been the case every year for many winter indoor seasons, as those postseason meets are no longer held at the indoor facilities of George Mason University.

Madison High School graduate Connor Barry had a productive season for the Christopher Newport University football team during the fall.

The sophomore starting quarterback completed 68 percent of his passes and averaged 195 yards per game throwing the ball for the Division III Captains.

It was the girls in a blowout and the boys by a whisker as the host Centreville Wildcats swept a varsity basketball doubleheader against a Concorde District rival Friday night (Jan. 10).

The Centreville girls (10-2) won 62-31 and the boys (7-6) rallied for a 56-55 victory over Madison Warhawks teams. The games were the district openers of the season for all four squads.

The Flint Hill Huskies have come up mostly winners of late, whenever and wherever they have played in boys basketball action.

Most recently, the experienced high-school team won on the road in D.C., defeating the host Maret Frogs, 61-49, to improve to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference action.

Two local players who graduated from Fairfax County schools continue as big contributors for the success of the Gettysburg College women’s basketball team this season.

Both are starting junior guards: Alayna Arnolie a graduate of Madison High School and A.B. Holsinger is a Langley High grad. The two have helped the Bullets to an 11-1 overall record through Jan. 7 action.
