It was the girls in a blowout and the boys by a whisker as the host Centreville Wildcats swept a varsity basketball doubleheader against a Concorde District rival Friday night (Jan. 10).
The Centreville girls (10-2) won 62-31 and the boys (7-6) rallied for a 56-55 victory over Madison Warhawks teams. The games were the district openers of the season for all four squads.
The defending 6D North Region champion Centreville girls took control from the start, building a 9-0 lead, were ahead 14-2 at the end of the first period and up 32-15 at halftime for the Wildcats’ third win in a row.
Kennedy Parrott scored 21 points and had two assists for the Centreville girls. Maila Siriwardene scored 18 with five rebounds and two steals; Claire Kang had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists; Molly Veley made two three-pointers off the bench; and Daniela Cuellar had six rebounds and two assists.
Ava Wu (three assists) and Emily Linegang each led Madison (6-6) in scoring with seven points and Jada Ramos-Diggs and Sara Becker (four rebounds) each scored six.
In the boys game, Centreville trailed for the majority of the time, leading 3-2 and 8-7 early, then taking its third and final lead, 56-54, with 1:25 to play on two free throws by Luke Scharkowski. Madison had a chance to win, but Mason Burger’s jumper from the left baseline missed at the buzzer.

Madison (7-5) was hurt by 20 turnovers, including three in the final stages of the game. Both teams also missed 11 free throws, with Centreville missing five in the fourth quarter. Madison missed three in the fourth.
Madison led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter despite eight turnovers, was in front 29-23 at halftime and 43-39 entering the fourth quarter. The Warhawks led 52-47 with 4:20 left in the game. Centreville battled back to tie the score at 52 then at 54.
Jaxson Davis scored 24 points and made three three-pointers for Centreville, Jack Siwert had 12 points on four second-half three-pointers, Maddox Davis scored 10 off the bench, Nicholas Hardy had six points and five rebounds, and Scharkowski had four points and four rebounds.
Madison was led by the double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds to go with five assists from Michael Dinkelacker. Also for Madison, Ryan Furlong had 13 points and eight rebounds, Burger scored 11, William Feuchter had nine points and four rebounds off the bench, and Hobbes Fiel scored seven.
