Flint Hill among boys hoop teams finding success in recent action

The Flint Hill Huskies have come up mostly winners of late, whenever and wherever they have played in boys basketball action.

Most recently, the experienced high-school team won on the road in D.C., defeating the host Maret Frogs, 61-49, to improve to 7-4 overall and 3-0 in Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference action.

The victory was the Huskies’ fifth in six games.

Prior to playing Maret, Flint Hill finished third with a 2-1 record at the Bull Holiday Invitational in Creedmoor, N.C.

Against Maret, Flint Hill built an early 6-0 advantage and led the rest of the way, taking leads by as much as 20 points. Maret rallied within 46-38 at the end of the third quarter, then the Huskies scored the first seven points of the final period to again move comfortably ahead.

Flint Hill head coach Rico Reed said he expected the Huskies to be a contender in the conference this season.

Leading the Huskies in the win over Maret was Kendall Jones with nine points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals, and Everett Jones with eight points, 12 boards and four assists.

Also for Flint Hill, Kobe Davis had 18 points, six rebounds and three steals; Caleb West added six points, five rebounds and five assists; Ty Harris had two points, two rebounds and three assists; Dylan Fletcher scored seven and had two steals; and Blake Fitzgerald had eight points and four rebounds.

In the holiday tournament, Flint Hill won the consolation game, 80-47, over Chapel Hill. Its other win was over Hillside of Durham, N.C., 83-76, and the Huskies lost to Coolidge of D.C., 73-63.

Flint Hill’s last five games have been on the road, and its next five will be away, as well.

In other recent holiday boys basketball action, the Oakton Cougars and Lake Braddock Bruins each finished 2-1 at the Lake Braddock Holiday tournament.

Oakton (6-4) defeated Jefferson, W.Va., 54-45, in the consolation game to finish third. The Cougars topped Battlefield, 59-57, in the first round then lost to Atlee, 69-52, in the semifinals.

Host Lake Braddock (3-5) lost its opening game to champion Heritage, 51-49, then won its next two games, 66-35, over Lightridge, and 70-60 over Battlefield.

  • The Marshall Statesmen (7-4) finished 1-1 in a boys holiday tournament. In Marshall’s victory, Shreyas Vaidya scored 24 points and made six three-pointers, Anderson Krisko had a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Trey Lonardo had 11 points and five rebounds.
  • The Madison Warhawks (7-4) went 1-2 in a holiday tournament, with its victory over Covenant Day School of Matthews, N.C., 54-37. Madison lost by 44-32 and 49-39 scores, leading at halftime in each game.

In the win over Covenant Day, Michael Dinkelacker had 20 points and 11 rebounds, with Ryan Furlong scoring 16 and having six boards. Mason Burger scored 17 in one of the losses.
