With a 30-0 road victory over the McLean Highlanders on Oct. 18, the Herndon Hornets recorded their third shutout of the high-school football season.
The Hornets improved to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty District with the win over McLean (3-5, 0-3). The victory also snapped a two-game losing streak.
The shutouts are Herndon’s most in a season since recording four back in 2004. Its other two shutouts this season were against Wakefield, 21-0, and Osbourn Park, 73-0.
The Hornets amassed a balanced 287 total yards in the win, 142 passing and 140 rushing. Quarterback Jon Callow passed for the 142 yards and two touchdowns, covering 55 yards to Stephan Castillo and 20 to Ethan Buhler. Callow also ran 10 yards for a TD. David Castillo added a five-yard scoring run.
Stephen Castillo and Sevan Bland scored two-point conversions, and Logan Lopez booted two extra points.
Among those leading Herndon’s defense were Bland with an interception; Nana-Freduah Appouh and Alec Beach with sacks; and Braylon Bates with a tackle for a loss. On special teams, Herndon blocked a McLean punt.
