Multiple local golfers qualify for Girls State Open tournament

By shooting rounds in the 70s, eight golfers from Fairfax County high school teams earned berths at a qualifying competition to play in the upcoming Girls State Open.

Resulting from their strong play, three players from Robinson and one each from Fairfax, Langley, West Potomac, Woodson and Lake Braddock will participate in the 18-hole Virginia High School League tournament Oct. 28 at Heritage Oaks Golf Course in Harrisonburg.

The 70-player Northern Zone Qualifier was held Oct. 21 at Twin Lakes Golf Course in Clifton.

Carding event-low rounds of 70 and earning State Open berths were Raquel Walker and Erin Mullin from Robinson, Cailyn Park of Fairfax and Isabel Vizgaitis of West Potomac. Moving up with 71s were Sydney Dinh from Robinson and Aurora Yoo of Woodson. Langley’s Sarah Wang qualified with a 75, as did Lake Braddock’s Samantha Nguyen with a 77. Centreville’s Victoria Sun shot 80 at the qualifier and just missed earning a State Open berth.

Players from 18 different Fairfax County high schools participated in the Northern Zone Qualifier. Multiple players from some schools, like Fairfax, Robinson, Thomas Jefferson and South Lakes, competed.

Walker already has enjoyed a strong season by winning an individual region championship and finishing second in the VHSL’s Class 6 co-ed state tournament. She also played in last season’s State Open, shooting 75 to finish tied for 12th.

Yoo (73, tied for fifth) and Park (78, tied for 16th) also played in last year’s State Open.
