The top seed Langley Saxons and Chantilly Chargers held serve by winning recent district-tournament volleyball championships.
Langley (23-1) won its third straight girls Liberty District crown and Chantilly (19-2-1) was first in the Concorde District high-school competition.
Langley received a first-round bye, then was 2-0 in the tourney, defeating the Herndon Hornets, 3-0, in the semifinals, followed by the Marshall Statesmen, 3-0, in the finals.
The two victories upped Langley’s winning streak to 18. The Saxons were 14-0 against district opponents, defeating each by 3-0 scores.
Top players for Langley in the tournament were Ana Toumazatos, Ava Barnett-McKenzie, Amber Smith, Claire Mo, Hanna Herbolshemer, Vivian Nitowski, Hailey Park and Rujuta Singh. Mo was chosen as the district’s Player of the Year and Langley’s Susan Shifflett the Coach of the Year.
Toumazatos, Mo, Nitowski, Smith and Barnett-McKenzie were chosen first-team all-district. Herbolshemer was chosen second team and Singh and Park garnered honorable mention.
Chantilly also had a first-round bye and was 2-0 in its district tourney, defeating Centreville, 3-0, in the semifinals then the defending champion Madison Warhawks, 3-2, in the championship match. Chantilly won the fifth game, 15-8.
The two wins upped the team’s winning streak to 10.
Top players for Chantilly are district Player of the Year Mimi Mambu and other first-team all-district players Erin Green and Julia Horan. Chosen second team were Sarah Kim and Riley Skyler. Making honorable mention was Nola Murphy.
Langley and Chantilly now advance to the 6D North Region tournament, where Madison is the defending champion and advances, as well.
