By a comfortable margin of 17 points and a much closer two, respectively, the Langley Saxons and Chantilly Chargers won girls and boys region cross country-championships on Wednesday (Nov. 6).
Langley scored 61 points and had its top five runners finish among the top 21 in the 2.98-mile 6D North Region girls high-school race at Burke Lake Park. The Yorktown Patriots were second with 88 points.
Leading Langley was Lila Pesavento in sixth place in 18:39. Hazel Calway also was in the top 10 in ninth (19:02). Sinika Meka was 16th (19:30), Paige Poulos 18th (19:39) and Adeline Middleton 21st (19:40).
The Madison girls placed third with 103 points. They were led by Kiki Van Der Weide in second (17:56) and Lydia Mikhin in third (17:58).
The winner of the girls race was Herndon’s Megan Sullivan, quite comfortably in 17:46. She finished second last season.
Caroline Elliott of South Lakes was fourth (18:09) with Caroline Sapperstein of Oakton fifth (18:22), Aya Ryan of South Lakes sixth (18:53) and Centreville’s Amy Cheong 10th (19:06).
The Oakton girls placed fourth (110 points) and South Lakes was fifth (114).
In the boys meet, Chantilly was led by individual winner Tristan Thurneysen, who was second last year. He won in 15:06 with his teammates Jack Morgan fourth (15:12), Aiden Sarkees 16th (16:29), Liam Westenbroek 18th and Kabir Nair 19th (16:33). Morgan also was fourth a year ago.
Chantilly had 55 points, two fewer than the runner-up Centreville Wildcats. The South Lakes Seahawks were third with 91.
For Centreville, Elijah Post finished second in 15:11, the same time as his third-place teammate Danny McGlynn. Wyatt Jessup was 13th (16:20), Evan Plath 20th (16:35) and Jackson Loyer 22nd (16:39).
Leading South Lakes was Jason Raffel in seventh (15:55) and George Hood in 10th (16:07).
For the fifth-place Langley High boys, Gavin Silva finished ninth (16:06) and Zain Rasheed was 12th (16:12).
For the sixth-place McLean High boys, Carter Lineweaver finished eighth (16:02) and Akay Onat was 15th (16:24).
